Udawalawe National Park started off initially as a sanctuary for wild animals displaced due to the human intervention and deforestation caused from erecting the Udawalawe reservoir. It is popular as one of the best places to see wild Asian elephants in their natural habitat along with many other animals and plant species here in this 6th largest National park in the country.
This excursion can be either started off from Colombo (6 am) or the South Coast (6.30 am).

Udawalawe National Park
This reserve was established back in the year 1972 and it spans over 30,820 hectares. The rich bio diversity with 184 types of birds, 43 types of mammals, 33 types of reptiles and 135 types of butterflies makes this national park a top visited one in the island.
Elephant Transit Home
This establishment looks after sick, orphaned and injured elephants until they are healthy and fit to be reinstated back into the wild. Roughly around 30 elephants reside here and it is located approximately 5 km away from Udawalawe National Park.
